Alcohol Plays a Big Part in “100 Deadliest Days of Summer”

Oct 25, 2023

(KNSI) – The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says we have entered the 100 deadliest days of summer.

The time from Memorial Day to Labor Day tends to see a spike in crashes, especially for teenagers. Alcohol is a big factor. A car was pulled over on Friday, May 26th, in St. Joseph after it was clocked going over 100 miles per hour. Inside was a driver surrounded by five open containers and two more 12-packs in the back seat. He had a blood alcohol reading of 0.28.

The sheriff's office says going the speed limit, avoiding distractions, wearing your seatbelt, and refusing to drink and drive help to reduce danger on the roadways.

The advice isn't confined to just pavement. The agency says a man was thrown from his boat due to a wave on Rice Lake Sunday, May 28th. The boat continued to run, circling him as he struggled in the water. Luckily, a pontoon was nearby and came to the man's rescue. He blew a .11. The boat eventually found its way to shore, narrowly missing two docks. A person was able to hop into it and pull the safety lanyard to bring it to a stop.

Riding an ATV is another activity you should avoid if you have been drinking.
